Our second luncheon for the year was one of those events where no one seemed to want to leave. It was a warm March day and I had the pleasure of sitting with Grant Walmsley as he shared experiences from the many different arenas he has found himself in over the years, and what he has learned about life. It made for a terrific conversation.
Grant shared with us what he considered to be the key ingredients to success on a few different fronts.
Successful partnerships are built on:
- The right people
- The right environment
- A clear, shared vision
Red flags and threats to success:
- An unwillingness by others to stay on the same path
- Individuals putting their own needs before the shared vision
- Lack of commitment to the journey
Grant talked about the importance of mentors and friends – having wise counsel when it comes to making big decisions and weighing up new opportunities. To have a cheer squad to turn to and divert your focus from your failures and helping you to “maintain the rage”.
Most importantly, find your Yoda…that close, trusted mentor. Listen when these people say “this is why I didn’t make it”.
When it came to Newcastle, we all agreed it has so much to offer… but without arts and culture, we won’t remain one of the top 10 places in the world to live… it’s not purely based on economic drivers.
“No matter what you do, have an attitude of being the best at it,” Grant said.
Grant finished with a short rendition of his hit song Better, which he said is a song about hope, and blazing your trail.
Our next luncheon – April 9
At our next luncheon we will host local high-profile businessman, Hilton Grugeon. We’ve asked Hilton to share his insights on how to plan for the future and how to make things happen. This promises to be an insightful luncheon, with lots of practical take-aways and I encourage you to get in early to secure your tickets.
