President's Message

Celebrating 85 years of Newcastle Business Club

Welcome to 2018! I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to be leading the Newcastle Business Club in its 85th year. It is an absolute honour and I am very excited about what we have planned.

To be honest I didn’t know if I would ever throw my hat into the ring to be President as I have been supporting presidents for about 12 years in my role on the committee. So I have seen the work involved.

For those of you who don’t know me, I am the Owner and Chief Marketer of The Marketing GP. We work with our clients to help them develop and implement strategic and integrated marketing. We also offer a marketing course that has been designed for small and micro businesses and startups.

As a marketer, I am well aware of the benefits of networking and relationship building, and therefore the importance of organisations like the Newcastle Business Club. Which is why I have been involved for so many years!

Every President is supported by a committee of volunteers and I am very excited to be joined by a few returning committee members as well as some new faces – a perfect mix.

My 2IC will be Bernie Garrett, a well-known speaker and business coach, who has stepped up from Junior Vice President to Senior Vice President.

Lenore Miller is a new face to the committee but not to the Newcastle business community, and is taking on the role of Junior Vice President.

Thankfully Dene Kilpatrick of Visionary Advisors is continuing on as our Treasurer.

Another Past President, Kris Leck of Catalyst Project Consulting, will continue in his role of Sergeant-at-Arms.

Our Secretary position will be handled by new committee member, Sam Matthews of CBA.

And on our committee we have returning committee members – Alyssa Gill of Squib Communications, Sonya Hughes of Doyle Partners, Anna Bailey of Hall & Wilcox and Tiron Manning of Newcastle’s Buyers Agent.

I am also pleased to welcome to the committee Clare Ferguson of Monica Clare Recruitment and Steph Jordan of Dalton Partners Real Estate.

If you would like to get in touch with any of our committee members, please click here.

Obviously I would also like to thank and acknowledge our outgoing committee members:

  • Past President Jo Bright
  • Past President Ty Brennock
  • Secretary Kate Grob
  • Greg Valentine
  • Helen Ogle
  • Michael Williams
  • David Carey

The new committee has already held its first meeting and begun implementing a number of new initiatives. One of those is an expanded member offering. 2018 Newcastle Business Club membership will give you:

  • Discounted ticket prices
  • Access to event tickets 48 hours before non-members (so you don’t miss out!)
  • Permanent and stored name badge
  • VIP invitation to a FREE members only event
  • Access to a Business Profile spot
  • Access to advertising
  • Luncheon speaker benefits, even if you can’t attend the event
  • Free copy of our annually printed VISION

We encourage you to not only take advantage of these great benefits but to also support the Newcastle Business Club in its 85th year. CLICK HERE to renew your membership or to become a member for the first time.

And now on to the main business of the Club – our luncheons! The first event of the year is our annual Mayoral Panel, scheduled for Tuesday, 6 February 2018.

During the 85 years of the Club we have had a strong connection to central Newcastle and more recently we have made an effort to expand our focus to the wider Hunter region. With that in mind, last year we changed our approach and decided to create a Mayoral Panel instead of our traditional presentation from the Lord Mayor only. This event was a sell-out in 2017 and we expect it will be the same this year.

We have confirmed that Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes, Mayor Loretta Baker, Mayor Ryan Palmer and Mayor Kay Fraser will be presenting on the topic of What council is doing for business, focusing on the initiatives their council has in place, or in planning, to assist local businesses to succeed. Tickets are now available, so CLICK HERE to RSVP.

We have already locked in our topics for the following months as well, with our March event looking at cyber safety and our April event covering how to keep bricks and mortar services and products relevant in an online age. Below are our event dates for 2018 so you can lock them into your calendars. (Don’t forget that as a member you get early access to luncheon tickets!)

  • Tuesday, 06 February
  • Tuesday, 06 March
  • Tuesday, 10 April
  • Tuesday, 08 May
  • Tuesday, 12 June
  • Tuesday, 10 July
  • Tuesday, 14 August
  • Tuesday, 11 September
  • Tuesday, 16 October
  • Tuesday, 13 November
  • Tuesday, 04 December

In addition, we will be holding our first FREE members event in March (yet another reason to be a member) as well as our 85th anniversary gala event in May. Further to our 85th celebrations, from February we will also be releasing a video a week featuring a past President, committee member, life member or someone who has impacted the Club over its 85 years. Suffice it to say, there is a lot happening in 2018!

I look forward to seeing you at one of our luncheons or events in 2018 – please take the time to come and say hello.
